Message from the President and CEO.

To the WBDC Community:

It is with a heavy heart that I am writing to you. It is heavy with weight of the recent events. The weight of injustice and inequality. The weight of generations of racism and prejudice. To my black colleagues, clients, partners, and friends, please know that I cannot know just how difficult it is because I have never walked in your shoes, but I do feel the weight of these issues.

The murder of George Floyd was deplorable but it was not an isolated event, it was the most recent in a series of tragedies. There was a glimmer of hope as thousands of people across our region, and our country, rose in protest to express their anger, their frustration, and to demand change. But that was marred, in some cities, where a fraction of people used this opportunity to commit crimes, crimes that disproportionately impacted business owners, especially small business.

I hope, in this time of tragedy, our communities will come together to elevate the pain, suffering, and injustice that occurs every day. I hope that the outrage can evolve into empathy and understanding so we can move to a solution that disrupts systems of oppression.

The WBDC stands against racism and inequality of all kinds. We stand with the peaceful protestors. We stand up for equality. We will continue to stand and be here for our clients. We will continue to be an agent of change.
